migratory bird permit

I have applied for a migartory bird permit for the state of ohio and it has been submitted for 3 weeks. I have not heard back yet. My question is can I take in bird mounts as long as I do not mount them until I have the permit or does the federal goverment issue tempary permit numbers so you can increase your customers while you wait for the actual permit. Also can I mount my own bird for my own displays without a permit.

You don't need a permit for your own birds

Now that's by federal standards. Your state may be entirely different. I recall a conversation with the feds years back and I was told that as long as I have proof of submission of license request, I could go ahead, but don't quote me on that currently. I'd just think it would be wiser for all parties if you'd hold off completely until you have license in hand. Do your own birds, but have your customers keep theirs to themselves while you wait.

I was told

I was told by my good friend who just happens to be a Federal Agent and does only migratory birds. He says don't touch a bird with out that permit in hand. He also pointed out alot of very important information about handling these birds as well. Most all offences dealing with migratory birds are Felonys so I would be very carefull taking in anything with out that permit. Just my .02 worth. My permit took about four weeks to get to me be patient. Jack F
