Have you done any taxidermy to date? or are you looking to just start out doing it? If you haven't done anything yet you should first study the trade then decide what you will need to work with. A good place to start is with a book or video on a certain specimen you wish to mount. This will give you a general idea on what you will need to get going such as tools and supplys. Good luck geting started it is the best thing I have ever done. I wish I would have done it years ago. Jack F
I have a MINI shop. I dont have to walk very far for tools, I just turn around. The first thing to do, is check your state laws and regulations, to see if you want to practice taxidermy. Some states are light on the rules, others are strict and require records and permits or a licence. Dont skip this part!
Then the next tool you will need, is to get as many taxidermy supply catalogs as you can. The tools and materials will be in there. Start with videos and Breakthrough and or Taxidermy Today Magazines. Gather as much knowledge as you can, then get your tools and materials. Then dive in. Good luck! :-)
I am also just starting. I am trying to get as many manuals and videos on birds as I plan on doing learning birds first. I also am obtaining supply catalogs. I am lucky as Matuska Taxidermy Supply is only 60 miles away and I was able to go to thier showroom. They have helped me alot with the tools I need and advice. If a Taxidermy Supply company is close and they have a showroom I would suggest you vist them. Also vist this forum it has alot of good advice.
Good luck
WASCO has beginners books for a very reasonable price. Also check around and see if there is anybody that does Taxidermy in yur area. I have someone that is showing me how to do Deer head mounts and next season he will let me bring some to his shop . I will do everything and he will just stand back and correct me if I do something wrong. Also the advice from the foeum has helped me alot. Most of the time someone on here will be patience enough to help you with your projects and answer any questions. LOL
