Hi all,
I was wondering with all the uncertainty surrounding the Pa taxidermy exam and judging criteria could you clear the air? I guess Paul C. would be best to answer this but all are welcome to add their two cents. What is on the checklist of items that the judges are looking for specifically? Is there a checklist or is it all judge interpretation? Please don't misinterpret the tone of this email I simple need to pass the exam! I hear people saying the work must be clean and dust free. That is not true at all! Your work must be a lot better than just clean. That is not the only criteria. What I am looking for is what besides the obviouse are you looking for. Also if anyone failed the exam would you please share exactly what the judges said about your mount?
Thanks a million to all who help!

My guess is that Paul Czarnecki is probably playing/guiding in his boat on Lake Ontario or Lake Erie and probably won't respond. There has been extensive discussions on the permit system in Pennsylvania and a search using "Pennsylvania" "Pa" combined with "Permit" or "license" or similar words will give you hours of reading. Croc may be reading this, or others who have recently taken the test and he could give you more insite.
I am sure any specimen that would get even a yellow ribbon at the state association meetings in the Professional Category would be sufficient unless it had a major flaw that was overlooked in judging. Of course you will need a yellow or better in all categories to get the general license, along with knowledge for the written test, and proficiency in whatever task they have you do.
i can dig out my forms from april and let you know what was basically wrong with them, Stephen hit it on the head pretty good though, the only two critters i passed with both took yellows at the state comp this year. basically looking for symmetry and realistic looking mounts, think i got hit most on hair patterns on deer and my birds are pretty much horrendous lol, email me and i'll see if i can help, good luck, Croc
im not sure you are being judged as much as tested. they are looking for specimens anatomically correct. proper eye sets, ear butts that are correct and in the right place, drumming in troublesome areas
clean pcs. free of paint over spray and hide paste any attachment rods or wires must not be visable. just a pc. of work a customer wouldnt mind paying for. not a blue ribbon at the state show! dont forget there is a written exam and a hands on exam. read your pa taxidernmy hand book and the pa. hunting and trapping digest. and if your mounts are presentable and done by you, you wont have any problem setting an eye or identifieing duck heads. also check out the pta web site, theres a wealth of knowledgeable people in the pta. will to help out. good luck
