ELK BONES

Submitted by SHESUPSIDEDOWN on 07/21/2004 at 16:30. ( ) 24.21.213.93

I was recently gifted a elk skeleton....it was already pretty clean but still had some dried meat here and there so I simmered it in baking soda.. then cleaned throughly with a brush... then soaked in Dawn....
hmmm but heres the question...the bones smell awful and I cant seem to rid them of it....plus I am not sure if Dawn did the trick with degreasing.....
any advice on how to get the smell out? How long to soak in different solutions to properly degrease?
I would like to avoid bleaching because I like the natural color but if neccessary I will....
Also is there a hardener to coat bones with if using them for sculptural purposes?
thanks!

Most of the information you require is in the archives. If you are interested however, I can do the final preparations on your osteological material for you if you like? All I ask is that you cover shipping to and from me, and grant me permission to mold the bones. In exchange I will do the final cleaning, degreasing, and if you wish, conservation (term used to preserve bones over the long term).

Email me if interested.
