turkey base

Doing my first turkey base. If my base has a small recess, about a quarter inch or so, do I have to apply foam or just mix Elmer's glue and dirt to get my heigth? I don't want a flat look. I assume you can mound the dirt and glue a little. I plan on making the base myself because I want it about 30 inches high. I thought about buying a turkey base and mounting it to a pedestal that I make but I am worrying about the wood matching. Any advice would be great.

First I never heard of mixing dirt and emers glue together. you can still pour the foam and carve it to your liking ,once the foam is set up take you stout ruffer and go all over it and ruff it up , you can even take a knife and cut out shapes , then get some glue of you chocie spread it out all over your base, then take some peat moss until it is a couple inches high you can press it in also let it set over night then dump the extra off, then get your elmer's glue mix 50/50 with some hot water shake ,now take some peat moss fill in where you can see some voids once you have that down cover you table and the wood aroud you base spray the entire base try not to get it on you wood. Once it drys it looks like nice fresh dirt

Hi I am only a beginner so my ideals might not be the best. But I did a Pheasant mount with a base and dirt. I pored tons of elmers glue on first and then put dirt on top. Then if any of the glue started soaking through i would just add more dirt and it seemed to turn out good. hope this helps

Dirt and Glue

While making a mound of dirt/elmers will work, it will probably take 1-2weeks to dry...maybe longer. I recommend using the 2part foam and carving/rasping it to the shape you want. Blow off the dust and thin some bondo with fiberglass resin. You don't want it to runny, just smooth enough to spread (a little thinner than jelly). Catalyze the mixture and brush it over your foam. Before the resin/bondo kicks off, pour some dirt over it and press the dirt into the bondo. When the bondo has set, you can blow off any excess. You may need to apply some elmers glue to any bare spots and then apply dirt. This will dry within a few hours. Hope this helps.

Try Peat Moss as opposed to regular dirt, looks better, in my opinion anyway..
Good Luck
