i have searched the archives and looked for pictures but can not find any to show this. will a wood duck grab a smaller limb like other birds or will it only land on large limbs it doesent have to hold on to?

I have seen them perch on barbed wire... but then again I have seen mallard perched on telephone wires too..... although they can do it... it looks kinda funny and they usually don't have the balance to stay there too awfully long.

is would a wood duck, when perched, grasp a branch like an upland game bird would?...I raise birds, including woodies and pheasants...they have perches in their pen and I have paid attention to this detail..from what I have seen...No..a wood duck or any duck, does not grasp the perch like a game bird such as a pheasant would...you do not want the feet to curl around the branch in the same manner..instead, ducks seem to keep their feet back a little on the branch to maintain their balance..pheasants perch directly on the ball of the foot, for the most part,.. and my ducks seem to USUALLY have the the ball of the foot a bit over the back edge of the perch (you may need to run your supporting wire a bit down the center part of the foot)..the webbed part of the foot itself may curl some, usually the outer side of the foot more and the inside part less depending on their stance..the whole foot sticking straight out would not look very natural or appealing.. though I have seen them perch like that on occasion..
Hope this helps
