Hello,
Last year I tanned a coyote hide I got last fall. It came out great. Here in ohio deer bow season starts in October. I was thinking of doing some Coyote hunting before then . It is now August 15th and I would like to know if the hides will be any good this time of year. When are the hides prime and when will they be ok for tanning? Thanks for any help,
Jess

The best coat on any animal will be fuller in the cold winter. They shed thier hair just like a dog to deal with the heat. I take my yotes in Dec-Feb. Im not far from you. South Central Indiana.
The hides are all crap now. Like Eddie said, wait until winter, or at least November.
Coyote
if they are over populated and you need to thin them down because they are messing with livestock, or pets, or trash or such, or if they are over populated they WILL get mangy and could get diseased so thinning them wouldn't hurt. If you jsut have a normal population that you only harvest a few from yearly i would wait, unless you are extremely bored. They have the least hair and the thinnest skin in auguest and sept. And they will probaly spoil by the time you get to them after you shoot 'em. Well i don't know how good of a shot you are but for me 600 yards is a LONG walk ;-) LOL
Here in the mountains of Colorado they start priming up late September/October. Some of the nicest hides I have seen are taken in October. Basically it is the cold nights that can start them thickening up in my opinion. I used to run a trapline and found that the dogs start to rub in January, so the best hides are Oct-Nov-Dec. By late Jan/Feb they are crap.
Our coyotes in Ohio will be pretty shabby looking until at least mid december, even then they are average at best. I trap about 50-60 yotes a year and see a bunch more at the fur auctions every year. You have to go through a bunch of coyotes in Ohio to get a really good one. We dont have coyotes like the western states do I dont know why but our coyotes are wire haired and ugly! I shot one in wyoming while I was antelope hunting and that was in october and it looked better than any yote I had ever seen at home. It had nice silky soft hair. Ours are like a walking wire brush! Good luck don't let the hides stop you from killin em we have way to many! I had two of the bastards attack my turkey decoys this spring.. Only one made it home to tell the story! 31/2 inch No 6's at about 10 yards did the trick.. That was the end of his turkey dinners...
mid to late november will be fine.
