when should one degrease a animal right after skinning it out or after salting it just before cream tanning it? was wondering how many of you do your initial fleshing of like a deer cape with a fleshing maching? i had always thought you did the fleshing either after the pickle or once it was cream tanned. thanks in advance.

Deer are not an animal I think of when you speak of "degreasing". With deer, I try not to wash them at all until I'm washing the cream tan off the hide before mounting. Then I use Knobloch's Presoak to wash it thoroughly. Degreasing is needed for bears, coons, beavers, possums, otters, pigs, etc. I usually degrease mine after they're salted and before final shaving. Black bears go to the tannery for me anyway, however, and I let them worry about that step.
