Hog Snapper / Hogfish Skin Mount

Submitted by Slim on 8/25/04 at 7:45 AM. ( edy49@cs.com ) 152.163.253.38

I have searched the archives and found very little info on the Hog Snapper. Though I tried to talk the customer into a repro, he wants me to attempt a skin mount. Has anyone ever mounted one and what kind of problems will I encounter? Thanks!

It's possible to do it. If you cast the head, and degrease the skin really really good. I would also seriouly think about reproducing the fins also. And then charge the customer for all the extra work involved. I would still prefer a repo to a skin mount, for any saltwater fish, and explain this to the customer. Charge him or her for the extra big time.

Thanks Coyote...Yea, the head is way too fleshy and would require so much rebuild from shrinkage, that casting is the best way. The dorsal is the same way. Oh, and I found out that the scales loosen much like a Crappie. Your suggestions reinforce my thoughts on this Hog and are much appreciated. Thanks again for your support and Taxidermy.net........Slim
