Dying bear skin for rug ?

I am preparing to do my first rug mount. It is a brown/phase black bear. In reading through the archives and also wholesale ruggers web pages dying the skin is mentioned. I would assume that is to help blend/hide thin furred areas? Is the dye applied to the fur side? How is it applied?
Also I am curious as to what the purpose of using batting is.
I know it would be easier to send to a rugger but since this is my first one I want to do it myself.
If I missed this in the archive let me know the search parameters and I will look it up.

The dye is sprayed on to the hide from the hair side in those armpit areas that show white though the hair. You can buy colored fabric spray or some suppliers carry their own. In a pinch, flat lacquer works just as well.

Batting is used to cushion the rug. Personally, I attach the batting with 3M spray glue and then spray the batting to tack down the felt. Once it's tacked down, then I quilt stitch it in blocks to secure it to the hide. I then trim and cut the batting and felt as I sew it around the perimeter of the rug.

It's a GREAT job for a beginner and you'll quickly learn to appreciate a rugger's services. Good luck.

Thanks
