Carpet Beetles?

I have a friend that has "carpet beetles" in his Cape Buffalo Horn bosses. Is there any way to get rid of them completely? Thanks for all your help. I appreciate this site and find it very educational. Al

rubbing alcohol, mothballs, and vacuuming

ugghh, I've had pieces in my collection destroyed by those little buggers. If they are in the horn bosses, they are probably elsewhere as well. In the past I had a hawk wing that was infested, so I put rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and hosed the wing down. This killed the ones on the surface, but I found that I had to really douse the thing - especially in between the feathers to get them all.
Vacuuming works well also. I would recommend that your friend do a thorough vacuuming of the room and clean out all dust and lint that like to accumulate in corners and on shelves and places like that. He may want to vacuum any and all mounts in that room also.
They also seem to be repelled by mothballs, so maybe wrap some saran wrap around the horn bosses with some mothballs inside for a day or two and see if that works.

Good luck.

If you can freeze it , this would be the best way . Leave it for a week and then refreeze again about a month later to kill off any eggs that hatch . If you have other mounts in the room , they maybe infested also so the beetles will just keep going from one animal to the next and back again . You may also want to check your kitchen area as they also eat cereal , rice , flour etc . Rick

Large freeszer?

This response submitted by Al on 10/19/04 at 7:17 AM. ( uniquewildlife@houston.rr.com ) 66.25.37.184

I like the freezer idea but I would need a "walk-in" freezer to do that, which I don't have. I am hoping Mona's idea works. Do you think if I drill smal holes in the horns and drop some liquid (from a pest control supplier called "suspend") in the holes, fumigate the head in a plastic bag....then apoxie the holes and paint over the apoxie. Could that work? I appreciate your advice! Thanks

Foggers?

I don't know if this will work so someone else please add your two cents. How about taking all your mounts and putting them in a small room, then set off some potent bug foggers.

The only way to "completely" rid mounts of these insects is by a process developed by "Miller Trophy Room" of Mt. Pleasant, NC. Their website is www.millertrophyroom.com
