Hi,
I have several frozen animals that I am in the process of skinning and I have a somewhat serious problem: I am skeletonizing them (primary use), but certainly don't want to lose the skins. And I don't have any money right now to tan them. I am not a taxidermist (don't have any supplies at all), but would really like to save the skins for a time when I might be able to tan them myself or have money to pay someone to do them for me. How can I preserve them?
I am skinning things from the size of bobcats to lions, and was planning on just refreezzing the skins (and pray that my freezer doesn't die). Is this the best plan? Should I try to salt them? Should I try to turn them? I don't have anything to deflesh them.
This is kind of stressing me out because the skins are so valuable that I am just miserable about the thought that I could lose them. Help!

A salted skin will last for a very long time (years) provided it has been well fleshed and the ears, lips, eyes, and nose have been turned. you also need to make sure to keep them in a bug, pest, and mouse free environment.
All you neeed is a sharp knife and the time it would take to flesh them.
Hi again,
Thanks for the advice, but what should I do if I don't have time to flesh and turn them?

I will see what i can do to help you get the skins tanned.
...and put them in plastic bags ,and freeze them.
Roll them up tight, hair side out,and double bag them in garbage bags.
Seal the bags with zip ties . They will keep for a year or more as long as the bags don't get holes torn in them.
