If you plan to transport them across state lines ( raw pelt, tanned pelt or mount) they require to be tagged with a bobcat pelt tag. Also you cannot legally sell a bobcat pelt in TX without it being tagged. The tags can be obtained by a registered bobcat pelt dealer. Your TX Parks and Wildlife Department has all the info on where to find the dealers. The tags are supposed to be free of charge.

Mind you the tag has to be affixed PERMANENTLY on the pelt or mount.

what about?

They're not CITES tags however

That law only applies to TEXANS who are in TEXAS. If you get a cat OUT of Texas, then the game laws of the state it's entering apply ONLY. Texas has no jurisdiction outside the state obviously. CITES tags are issued for INTERNATIONAL transportation of ENDANGERS SPECIES (Convention for the International Trade of Endangers Sepcies is what CITES stands for). No CITES permits are ever required WITHIN the continental United States, those those tags required by individual states obviously do apply.

TX law

TX law states any bobcat shot in Texas must have a permanent tag attached to it if it is to cross state lines. your customer should have done so before he send it to you. A tag is required on all Texas cats even though your state law does not require it. The state or origin does and that's what counts. I really don't know who is responsible for the cat being taged now.

That should have read "ENDANGERED"

I must have been using rented fingers when I typed that one.

Evelyn is right. It must have a cities tag to leave or enter the state of Texas. BP

Had a friend recently ask me the same question!

Here is your answer.

You were correct in telling your friend not to buy bobcat pelts from Texas that are not tagged with a CITES tag. In order to be sold out of state a bobcat must be tagged with a CITES tag. Also, in order to be transported across state lines a non-resident hunter or trapper taking a bobcat in Texas must have the animal tagged with a CITES tag in order to take it back their state of residence. Texas provides CITES tags free of charge and they are available for the asking at game warden offices around the state. They may also be obtained by calling the main TPWD office in Austin at (512) 389-4481.

Sincerely,
