I am curious to know if it is possible to tan or dry out an elk (cow) hide at home. I contacted a taxidernist and was told it was going to cost approx. $200.00. Is there a less expensive way to get the same effect doing it at home, and is it complicated? I am open to any suggestions.Thank you.

Yes, it is complicated to the untrained person. To do it, you will need to do research, money to buy the pickle and tanning chemicals, not to mention proper fleshing of the elk. To dry it out, is not tanning it. First attempts sometimes fail and you could loose the hide. If you want it done right, take it to the taxidermist. Pay the $200.
What's $200 bucks anyway; the gun or bow and arrows you used to get the elk with cost you more than that. A set of tires on the truck cost more that that. A good push mower cost more that that.
Or put it in the freezer, do you're homework, practice or a road kill deer, then do the elk.

Do you own a Shaving Machine?

If you do not own a Shaving Machine - then it's best to "not" do it at home. Let the pros at the Tannery you use do it! Otherwise, after a lot of work and frustration you will find yourself the proud owner of a tanned - but not very stretchy or workable cape or life-size skin.

Basically - they are thickly fleshed and require shaving to produce a good soft tanned skin in your own shop. Yes - with such a machine you can do it - but without it - I'm afraid you will be very disappointed.
