Antler repair

Submitted by Tony on 11/30/04 at 4:39 PM. ( t1srff@aol.com ) 205.188.116.134

I have repaired(rebuild about 6") on a main beam of a whitetail. I just can't seem to get the paint or stain to match like. I build it up with epoxy sculpt. Then put a thin layer of Epo-Grip quick repair putty over that( because it said it accepts stain and paint well). But its just not quite there. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You

I am terrible at blending antler repairs of this nature. When I make a repair like this, I color the whole rack. First, I clean it with acetone or laquer thinner. After it dries, I spray the rack with a light to medium coat of spray paint called "Porcelain". I get it at Lowe's, but any bone colored paint will work. When this is dry, I apply a matte finish and let it dry. The I take burnt umber artist oil paint and I use paint thinner to thin it down. You can build up coats and allow then to dry some, then wipe off. You can repeat this until you get a good color. Then, I blend with fine grade steel wool. Once it dries, I spray a couple of good heavy matte finish coats.

I think?

It may have been Bill Gaither that had an excellent article on TR Supplies website. Look on there, I think it tells you everything you need to know and then some. I think the website is www.TaxidermyReference.com Good Luck! Dan Hudzik
