questions with tanning

I have just switched from (dp) to tanning and for what ever reason I
really prefer tan over dp. However I do have some questions that I hope you all could help with. I have been using Knoblochs liquid tan
and thought of switching to McKenzie tan. Could someone tell me the pros and cons of both. Also I have noticed on 4 out of 10 hides that the skin or hair around the eyes and nose peels after I have tanned. What is this and what can I do to prevent this. I apprecitate any help.
thanks

Peeling after tan, or after final fleshing

If doing some final fleshing with a fleshing horn after the tan, you could be pushing the nostril to far up the horn and stretching the eye and nose holes to big, and this will cause the damp skin to do "mini slips." Or peels.

The epidermis slippage around the eyes is not due to Liqua Tan, or any other tan. Its most likely water retained in the skin. Would I be correct to assume you arent using a pickle first?

yes I am pickling before tan. I have been drying the hide by using towels. the sawdust I have seems to stay on the hide and stain the skin side brown. I was afraid this might cause problems with the tan so it sounds like I'm not getting the hide dry enough before mounting. thanks for the response. also is one tan better than the other?

I hope youre using hardwood sawdust, as scrap sawdust is dirty, or may have sap, etc. Also, you need to keep it clean, as moldy sawdust turns stuff dark or even green! Glad to hear youre pickling, I prefer it too. Some tans allow the skin to pump, and doesnt release the water well. Im very pleased with McKenzie Tan now. If you do decide to use towels, put dry towels and cape into the tumbler.
