Salting a moose cape

Submitted by Todd Heyrend on 11/30/04 at 9:21 PM. ( tjtreed@cs.com ) 198.81.26.42

I'm getting ready to flesh and salt my first moose cape. I hear the nose and neck skin is very thick and the salt won't draw all the moisture out. I was told to make some cuts in the skin towards the hair roots for the salt to pentitrate, is this the correct method? I have the cape froze and I won't start on it until I have ALL the correct information. Help! Thanks

Todd

Todd, who told you that crap?

Salt will ALWAYS draw water out. Moose, elk, and bison usually need multiple saltings to work. Each day, dump the old and add new salt. DON'T CUT THE HIDE and tell the person who told you to do it that he has no business even speaking to a taxidermist.

And don't forget the bell

remove nose cartilage

When splitting the nose it is a good idea to completely remove all the cartilage. THey are not like deer in this respect - but the cartilage is so thick you would run the risk of slip spots if you did not remove it before salting.

Thanks for your help

Thanks for your help and all your input. It sounds like I better have a lot time when I start fleshing it.
