Howdy y'all. Wantin' to tan my first Texas White tail of the season. I've skinned and fleshed it. It's salted and rolled up in my freezer. I want to know what's the best to tan it w/? I want it really soft (the woman wants deer skin pillows) LOL! I've heard good things about Rittle's (I aint quite sure that I spelled that right but, you know what I'm talkin' 'bout). I also have another white tail that I had started to flesh and got sick of doin' it (had better, more important things to do) and so I just salted and froze it half fleshed. Should I not have done that? Can I finish fleshin' it after I've thawed it out? Or have I ruined it?
Thanks Y'all,
Jimmy

you should have skipped the salt before freezing. The salt is for takeing out the body juices before pickleing and tanning. And it melts things that are frozen. No worry's, Just thaw back out and finish fleshing, THEN salt real heavy and place on slanted plywood to drain for 24 hours, knock of old salt and re-salt with new salt for another 24 hours. Knock that salt off, put a dusting of new salt, fold in thirds and place under a fan and let it dry rock hard. Rittle's is a good kit to do, just follow instructions.
Like Mr.T said, salting then freezing is not the greatest Idea. I have used Rittle's and it works ok. If you live near a tannery just bring it to them and for a few more $$ they will fletch and dry tan the way you want it......just an idea of course. good luck
Some of you guys on here kill me with this stuff. I have to LMAO at these bogus looking posts. I think this is one of George's to get things stured up. George just thought I would say Hey Jack F
