Where to start?

I'm getting ready to retire from my job now. I want to start learning Taxidermy. I've been trapping for years, so I've been skinning and fleshing all types of animals.

Where is the best place to start, a video, book, school, one on one with a taxidermist? What equipment do I need to start?

get the Breakthrough manuals ,,,they are well worth the money and will answer questions you dont even have yet,,,and of course the videos all of which should be helpful if you are a begginer,,,sallie dahmes has a very good deer mounting video from WASCO ,,,and now would be the very best time to start a reference collection,,,magazines,,the internet,,reference from the supply companies,,,the more you get now the better off you will be later,,another tip is salt is salt the finer grain the better,i get mine at the farm supply store for 5.00 a 50lb bag,,and to the left of the screne you will see a orange button that says search,,if you type in a basic search discription you will get a ton of answers,,quicker that waiting for a reply..and you can trouble shoot you project before actually starting it,just a few tips hope at least some of them help,,,,,,jim

Trial & Error

I have only been doing taxidermy for about 2 years now and the best way for me to learn was through trial & error... practice on your own stuff or maybe you have some friends that would be willing to donate you a few things. Check with your local conservation agent about getting some roadkill, after all it's free.. what could be better. I agree that WASCO has the best catalog for finding all the supplies that you need, but there are also a lot of things around the house that come in pretty handy too. Good luck & enjoy!
