The tanning agents are absorbed into the tanned hide and would not be sufficient to tan a second time around.
alot of people have reused it with great results. just experiment a little on some old capes or skins to see how many times you can reuse it before negative results appear.
Your hide will only be pickled. The salt and acid are still in it but much of the tanning agent and oil were removed with the first hide you tanned.
how i do it - if there is a small amount of starting liquid <2 gals - i throw in a handful of salt and 2 oz of krowtann and use it again - has worked so far
You guys need to THINK about what you are saying. Look at this logically. The Krowtann basically has acid, tanning agent and oil as the main ingredients. You add the salt and water to complete the solution. As a hide is tanned it absorbs the tanning agent and the some of the oil. When you remove the hide the tanning agent is now in the hide and depleted from the solution. The ph may still read below 2.5 in the old solution but at this point it is only a dirty pickle. A new hide added would be pickled but NOT tanned. You CAN mount a pickled hide without proper tanning but there will be excessive shrinkage and reduced longevity. Water and salt are cheap so what is the point in re-using a nasty pickle and adding more Krowtann? Do you repeatedly re-use the same tea bags but just add a couple of new ones for every batch of tea you brew? If you are THAT busted you need to go up on your prices or get some other profession.
