extra caution around the scent glands, I can tell ya from experience, you don't wanna knick it! If this is your 1st project, put him in the freezer and find a squirrel, or even a rabbit.
I'm not about to attempt it, lol. Just wondered where they get the ba**s to. where are the glands located?

- Gas mask against organic vapors, dusts and mists
- Vicks under the nose
- Grin and bear it
- Wash it in the peroxide/baking soda/Dawn mix 5-6 times after removing all the essence
- Skin it when it's about 90% frozen so that the essence won't get on you
All methods need to be done outside or under a good fume hood!
I've seen all these methods listed.
They are on both sides of the sphincster muscles or sides of the anus. They are large and easy to find when skinning. ALl you have to do is miss them. If you don't, have fun. Hopefully you did not just eat breakfast.
i could skin skunks all day, i used to remove the glands from live skunks for pets.
I've never messed with a skunk, but I have removed the skin from a few other mammals that have essence of musk from hell. Being from Texas I have skinned out several javalena, they have a musk gland on there back, don't nick it! I think thats why they earned the name musk hogs. A ringtail is just about as bad, I had a real good apron but never could get the smell out of it because of one.
