WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SQUARE FOOTAGE AND LINEAR FOOTAGE ?AND HOW DO YOU FIGURE OUT BOTH ?

The difference is

a sq. ft. is 144 inches. that is 12 times 12 inches Linear measure is 12 in. = one foot three ft. = one yard 161/2 ft.=(51/2 yards) 660 ft. = one furlong. 320 rods =(5280 ft.) = one mile

one more thing

( 51/2 yards = one rod )

Simpler than the formula's

One measures AREA (square foot) while the other simply measures LENGTH (linear). And just WHAT were you doing in Geometry class?

okay now is if i got it right

if i have a hide 6ft in lenght and the price was 10.00 dollars a linear that would be 60.00dollar plus uncle sam . now the same hide
square ft would be 6ft x4ftwidth=24 sq,x240.00 right

thank you .never did understand this.from pa .as far as geo class .i was milkin chickens. ya not cows .thanks again

Square footage or square area is figured by multiplying length of an object times width. Example: If a square is 4' by 4' then 4" x 4" = 16 square feet. Use of graph paper is the easiest way to explain how geometric figures can be divided.

Linear foot is just the length of something as in board feet. A 6 foot long board is 6 linear feet regarless of any other measurements.

What were you doing in 4th grade?

This is third or fourth grade math dude! Just say no!

Uh, I hate to stomp on your parade Craig, BUT

Board feet is CUBIC FEET not square feet or linear. Boards sold by the linear foot are just that. Regardless of thickness, you pay for the length of the board.

Now BOARD FEET is the cubic feet of the piece. A 3/4 x 11 1/2 x 8feet is sold as EIGHT Board Feet. (Regardless of the fact that 1/8 inch has been planed off all edges, you pay the UNPLANED board footage of the piece you now possess. If you have a piec that's 1 3/4 x11 1/2 x 8, you now have SIXTEEN Board Feet to pay for, and so on and so on.

Tanneries charge square footage on a hide by using the graph Marty alluded to. Since they are irregular in shape, the flat hide is compared to a graph where the square footage can be more accurately measured.

Lets see

How many of you new what a rod or furlong was before I told you ? raise your hand' and be honest.

If Sally was board, and had two feet, and Jack was square but had one rod, would Sallys furlong be cubic or linear?

your enlightenment on the board foot issue. I did get the graph paper thing right though...Marty just said, "NO".
