To remove cartildge or not?

First, as a beginner I really appreciate this forum. I have learned so much from reading it. I've read most of the archives on the subject but have a question for y'all. I am not very good at ear work (splitting and removing cartilidge) and know I need more practice. I have a beuatiful big tom bobcat I'm going to mount LS and am concerned if I try to remove the cartilidge to put in decent ear liners that I'll screw it up because of my lack of experience. I know many of you use the bondo method with the cartildge and I was wondering how hard is that the first time you do it? The other option I was considering was leaving the cartilidge in and using Brian Harness Earliners (in Van Dykes). Has anyone used these liners with good results. I've used the cheap Van Dyke Plastic Earliners (came in a kit) and will not go that route again. Thanks!

To be honest, though I have done my share of bondo ears,I believe that taking the cartilage out is the best way and it is a skill that you should learn. It is really a good idea to be proficient in both methods.Having said that,it is difficult to do an ear like a bobcat's really well the first time.If the bobcat is important to you and you feel comfortable with bondoing the ears,I would go that way on this one.Just remember to use good reference when shaping them, and good reference throughout the project.WASCO's Breakthrough Mammal Manual has some good diagrams and tips on the angles and proportions of a bobcat's face-important stuff.Take your time with it and good luck.
