I am researching and have bought videos to try to learn to mount a deer head. I think I've decided to tan with Krowtann 2000 because it seems much easier to me, but I have a couple of questions. the directions say you don't have to salt, but I've read in a couple of post where the hide was salted and Krowtann 2000 was used. Will it do a better job if you salt first?
Next question if I freeze the hide first should I just let it thaw in the fridg and put it in the tan or should I soak it in something
Last question for now. How important is it to shave the hide thin? I'll be shaving by hand and not sure how thin I'll get it. I'll make sure I get all meat off, but not sure if I'll do a good job shaving skin.
I lied, I though of one more question.
The "B" measurement on the head from the throat around the neck. I read some post that said to add a 1/2" to this measurement. I plan on using The EDGE form from WASCO. Any experience with this form and measurements

I need to qualify my response by saying I am a beginner with only one deer mount complete. With the help of this site, It looks pretty good. Back to the question - Salt is not required with Krowtann, however you use some in the solution with the tan chemical. I used a raw skin and put it in the tan. I would let the cape start to thaw and then place in Krowtann - use gloves! Thawing in solution would be OK in my opinion.
I have read so much of shaving and found that my mount turned out good with minimal shaving. This is probably due to the use of a tanned cape and not DP. The form size I ordered was 1" less than my hair on size and it worked out very well. Have not used the edge form yet. I used the Legacy from Van Dykes and the Synchron eyes which worked well for a commercial style mount.
Good luck and keep reading - it will save you tons of problems! Without this forum I would have been in trouble.
If you HAD, you'd have clicked that SEARCH icon and for the ten thousandth time, you'd have seen it listed there. OR you might have really stressed yourselves and actually READ THE DIRECTIONS.
Did I mention lately how sick I am of seeing stupid Krowtann questions on here. IT'S A TAN, get over it.
Don't salt the hide if you are using Krowtann. Follow the directions exactly that will come with the tan.
Thaw it in the fridge.
You will need to shave it thin or you will have real shrinkage problems as it dries.
I am also a beginner with only about 14 white tails under my belt. Hand flesh and shave everything. After my first two or three I picked up a skife out of WASCO and couldn't believe the difference shaving the facial areas made. Nice lip tucks and less shrinking in the eye and pre orbital areas. Also gets the nose paper thin. Give it a shot. I have used the edge series and liked it! Nice facial detail, got to shave it thin though. Good luck.
sounds like you just dont like krowtann.and if your so sick of seeing questions about krowtann, why do you choose to read messages with that title..... P.S. Do you have to be so hateful?
Comments on this forum are to learn and not to bash people or products as you have commonly done. You have great knowledge and can get the same point across without offending. Tact is a crucial technique in life and can harbor you many good relationships while still making your point. I am sure you are a good person based on some comments I have read. Please relax a little on beginners and their questions. I shared my opinion based on my experience and yes, limited knowledge. My feedback was based on reading the instructions for Krowtann and actually using it. I know you do not use it - because it is the next worse thing to DP. I had good luck with Krowtann and was only giving my honest opinion to help another beginner. As you will probably respond in all caps, I am truly not trying to offend.
My name is Jacob. I am 9 years old. I like to read about stuff here with my daddy. I have a question--what is wrong with askin for help if you need it? Us kids are told its OK to ask for help and we are told to always be nice. I kinda wish alot o f perpole here would to.
Thank you.
Thanks for all the positive responses and help. As for the one negative, well I'll leave that one alone.
ill tell you what i am tired of. all of the prick taxidermist comming on the BEGINNERS note the word BEGINNERS forums and being just plain pricks. my advice to you pricks is stay the f--- off this forum and stay in the i know everything because i have been a half assed taxidermist for 30 years forum. SO SHUT UP AND PUT SOME A & D ON YOUR [expletive deleted] RASH AND STAY OUT OF HERE............................
Your point would be well taken if you didn't see the same irresponsible comments on here every day about the same product. Here's a prime example. The individual read the directions, obviously comprehended the directions, and then asked if it was OK for him to violate them. How responsible is that. We tell kids and adult "kids" all the time about rubber gloves, respirators, and venting, but there's always one numbskull intent on harming himself and others. Playing nice with this type mentality only allows others to be hurt. If no one comments, this post goes into the archives and is maintained in perpetuity. When "searched", it comes back as if it were factual.
Jacob, I'm delighted that your dad visits here with you and there's much to be learned. By the same token, however, I hope your dad has explained to you that some people can be nice and still be dead wrong. I try to treat each "beginner" with respect, but when I think one of them is being muleheaded, I tell them. They get mad at me and pout, but it does modify their attitude. Just like a playground bully, once called out, they tend to be smoke and mirrors. I'm no bully here, but I do tend to act like a playground monitor it seems. I've been doing taxidermy probably since before your father was born and many things I've done along the way caused me pain and injury. I try to make sure you don't experience those. So don't concern yourself with me grousing or shouting. If you need some honest information or have a particular question, feel free to ask it. I do look at the category it's posted under and I treat most beginners very delicately. The ones that I don't, I won't apologize for as I see them only trying to either endanger themselves or others with their actions.
that Georges frustrations may not be everyones. Thanks for the non- volatile reponse. It makes for a more pleasurable forum. I will admit there are some silly questions on this forum, but I do not think any of them are intended to offend long time professionals like yourself. Do not take them that way.
Hey George, I'm just curious....? How does it feel to have Soooo much knowledge covering Soooo many subjects....
