Fresh cape never frozen.
Skinned immediately after kill
Salted two days.
Pickled
Shaved
Tanned with liqua-tan.
Then frozen.
For 4 years.
Lost epidermis layer behind the ears the size of a quarter.
Why?

Thanks, John

Not enough info to say for sure.
Ears can slip due to taking a long time to split them and the heat from your hands can cause slippage.
It can also be from a thin spot on the ear from fleshing that damaged the roots of the hair folicles.
Also can be from moisture one the cape before it was salted dry.
Heat in the cape the was not allowed to cool off before rolling it up while salting.
A fold in the skin that didn't get salt on it.
A natural slippage from mange or some other skin afliction like dermitas, Ringworm, and other bacteria.
Damage to the skin epidermis wihle in the freezer, fur sticking to the side of freezer, freezer burn which I have not seen, but it might be a thought.
I am sure that you can get even more ideas fro some other guys, but this is all that I can think of right now.
