BIRD EYES

Submitted by Todd on 1/31/05 at 2:36 PM. ( ) 65.245.13.218

I have mounted six ducks. On the first three I used super glue around the eyes and they did'nt look good at all! They appeared to have a crust around the edges. (the glue) On the last three I used no glue. I just kept adjusting as they dried. The eyes on these look good. Here is the question. Will the birds with no glue give me problems later on? Thanks for any replies.

My thoughts

I would not worry too much but even with super glue alone the eyelids will still need rebuilding to their original fullness. What I like to do is take a piece of black thread and drag it through super glue gel. Let it dry all the way and then coat one side of the thread and place it on the eye adding a thin glue coat a little at a time as I am applying the thread. Scratch any excess glue from the eye. I use different thicknesses of thread for different birds. You can even use dark brown thread for lighter eyelids. I learned this technique on this sight. It works real well.

Thanks for the reply Joe. So after I finish the mount I use the thread to build up the eyelid all the way around. Is this correct?

bird eyelids and glue

Todd, As for glue around bird eyes, why not try this? Set the eyes with Apoxie Sculpt. Place a thin ring of Apoxie around the eye and once the head skin is in position press the skin around the eye into the Apoxie. The skin will stick yet allow you to adjust as needed. You will still be able to rebuild the eyelids as you choose to do and won't have to worry about the skin moving in the future. Enjoy, Aaron H.

Thanks Aaron, I'll try that this weekend.
