t-pins oryx mount

I just finished my first Gembsbok oryx mount. Where I used t-pins behind the jaw bones left rust marks and inditions. I guess this is because of the light,short skin. Is there a way to remove these(rehydrate the area) and put cardboard under the pins next time?
