Crusty pig?

Submitted by Curtis on 2/23/05 at 4:43 AM. ( ) 4.7.214.126

I mounted two pigs. I pickled them and tanned them with McKenzie tan. As they dried I noticed that they were getting a crusty look on the bare areas by the brisket. Kind of like pork rines. It makes the mount ugly and I don't know what's doing that. The first pig I dried fast with a dehumidifier and a fan. Thinking that I dried it too fast and caused the pork rines look, I slow dried the second one but still had that look. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

about the wrinkleing pork rine look. you didnt say if you're dying the hide or painting that area but that might help hide it. Most people paint it, then brush the paint out of the hair. Good luck.

are you sure your fleshing throughly

Not to knock you but it sounds like a fleshing issue. Brisket area is a touchy area but there is membrane that has to be removed.

I got the skin fleshed down to where hair roots are poking through and the skin looks clean of all fat/membrane. I am concerned about painting it because I'm not sure I can match the natural look good enough for it to look decent. ? i'm puzzled? Thanks for the input guys!

Curtis,
I cannot picture in my mind what it is you are discribing but, if you send me a photo I bet I can help you out. If you have a digital, take a few pictures from different angles so that I can tell depth and shadows to help determin the full problem.
