I was thinking of trying out the newer McKenzie Brush Tan. Has anyone ever tried using it and had good-excellent results? Is it like a tan and oil combo?
The only good stuff I heard was the stuf I read in the catalog, but a neighborhood taxidermist told me it really stiffens deer hide and bear fur. He also told me that it sticks very badly if you don't wash it properly.
I'd also like to know if Krowtann would be a good all-in-one tanning fluid. Never heard anything bad about it...yet. You just flesh your hide and apply? No salt, No Pickle, Nothing? Just use it out of the bottle and onto the raw skin?
Will these tans old well to age?
Lemme know how your previous encounters had turned out!
Thanks!

KROWTANN is not a junk paint on tan, you must soak the tan in it.
Split flesh and trun. then a 3 day soak!
McKenzie tan works, but like any other paint on tan, you have to salt, pickle, neutralize and then paint it on.
I like Krowtann, even though the method worries me, its still good. I got some shrinkage around the thin areas no matter what I tried, but overall its good.
As most already know, I really like the McKenzie tan. I couldnt tell you about it sticking, etc, as I clean and tumble everything. Good luck to you!
I have been using the McKenzie tan and have used it on African along with North American. McKenzie tan is not sticky like liqua tan when you get it in the hair. As far as Krowtan goes? I'll start using it when all the major tanneries start tanning their hides with it. Before anyone says that the major tanneries don't use liqua tan or McKenzie tan either, thats fine but they do run the hides through a pickle. I guess when it comes down to it, if it works for you then keep using what you find works best for you. I wou;ld reccomend the Liqua Tan or McKenzie tan though. Both are fine products. I even like to use Curatan on flat deer hides. Seems to work great on them. Like a post a few days ago said, the guy said he'll let you know what his Krowtann hides are like in 20 years. It just hasn't been around as long as some of the other tans. McKenzie tan is a relatively new tan as well. Good Luck, Dan Hudzik
I've had exelent results with McKenzie tan,And personaly ,more comfortable with pickeling first. As far as Mess? i tumble all hides in hardwood saw dust,(cures alot of evils).
I McKenzie tan all my hides now. Faster, easier, works great, less chance of slippage and not sticky.
i cant speak for everyone but
i played around using the krowtann
i found if i oiled after the soak and wash
i get absolutely no shrink
awesome stuff
McKenzie tan i tried had mixed results with and without extra oil
i found a lot of shrinkage on some
just my observations
i took the time to call ozark woods and pick their brains
they were most helpfull 1 800 467 0369
I think I'll try out this McKenzie tan, hopefully it will bring me more good than bad.
Thanks guys!
Lee,
I have used Liqua-Tan but I decided to give the McKenzie tan a try. I really like it. It was not oily. It did not really mess up the hair if it got into it. I found that the stretch it gave the skin was incredible. Once I have used up all of my Liqua-Tan I am going to use only McKenzie tan on my deer capes. Please understand,I am not putting down Liqua-Tan, I just liked the McKenzie tan better.
