What are the laws or needsto become a offical taxidermist in Iowa?
Return to Beginners Category Menu
All you need to do to become licensed to do taxidermy for the public in Iowa is go to the same place you buy your hunting/fishing license and tell them you want to purchase a taxidermy license.
The cost is $16.00 per yr. If you want to do ducks/geese you will need to get a Federal license also. They can't seel that to you ,you need to go through US Fish and Wildlife for that.
Are you just starting out or have you been doing some for yourself?
If you are interested the ITA ( Iowa Taxidermists Assoc. ) has a show comming up next month April 21-24 @ $ Points Sheritan on Meryl Hay Rd in DesMoines. It is well worth the $ spent to go to the seminars.
If you want give me a call the 1st of the week and I can fill you in on some of the seminars and things that will be going on that weekend.

Matt, where are you in Iowa? I am right near Galva, Ia, thats 50 mi. east of Sioux City on Highway 20.
I'm in Davenport so it's about a three hour drive to Des Moines. Another thing about a taxidermist license is whether the dnr or anybody ever contacts or visits you, that is what I heard but it could be for another state. But I guess I am surprised how easy it is to be licensed.
who your DNR officer is? I called mine when I was getting started 6 years ago I got his toll free # then if there was or is something I am not certain of I give him a call, he did stop buy my studio once when I first started but he was just more or less just in town he never asked to see any thing, he just sat and talk for about an hour your guy might be different but I think they will not bother you unless you give them a reason to be suspious
I'm west of you about 1 1/2 hrs.I live about 40 miles west of Iowa City and yes my DNR guy has shown up 2 times the 7 yrs I've been in business.
Like Wink said ,if you dont give them a reason to be suspisious usually you dont have any problems with them.
Also it would be a good idea to know who your DNR officer is and have his # incase you do have a question.
My offer is still open for you to call me or leave me your # in an email and I will call you back .
