Just be sure and look at each little 2x2 inch section of your reference pics and replicate.

Do not be scared.

Even if you do poorly it is still a learning experience. That is the only way to look at it. There is no reason to get embarrassed. Everyone started at the bottom. Just get your critique with the judge and next time correct the mistakes you made. You can only get better.

One of the great things about shows is the opportunity to meet the guys you admire and have the chance to spend some time with them. That is how we improve. Maybe some of the other guys who do well in your show will spend some time with you as well. Go to the seminars and take lots of notes, then next year enter again and you will be able to see your growth. Good luck with that boar, have fun and enjoy the show!

I just came from my first show that I entered a mount in, I was scared and I didn't think I would even place, but I only wanted someone to tell me what I was doing wrong and where I could improve. I was surprised when I found out that I won a ribbon in the novice division, it wasn't white or red, but a blue one. I can't wait for next year now. What ever you do, just go and take something, this is my best tip for you.

Boars don't have glossy noses, make sure it is matte finish.

Drumming is a number one boo boo, use good hide paste.

They actually look for pin holes not filled and deduct accordingly. They will find them.

Open mouth work should be clean with no overspray on the teeth.

Make sure you clean off any overspray on the hair around the lips.

Judges "will" find fingerprints on any finished surface, including deep inside the mouth.

Make sure whatever you secure the tongue with don't let if squirt out or the judge will see it. They can see hot melt glue a long way off.

Make sure "if" using an artificial nose that you "blend" it to the skin. Use a toothbrush to tap a texture into your modeling compound while it is wet in this area.

Ears should be smooth on the edges, "no drumming" , with a smooth transition between inner skin and inner ear if using a liner with the inner ear detail molded in, Use some good clay for the base to model in the wrinkles on the back edge of the base. Keep working them until dry.

Make sure the eyes are angled correctly and the nictitating memranes are proper. Reference. No paint or glue on finished eye.

I'n sure there are more things but you just need to be thorough. Download the scoresheet and go from there.

Go to the show with an open mind and the will to learn. You will be critiqued, if you ask, so take it for all it is worth. I was wondering about my first boar entry back in '96 and Marcus Zimmerman was the judge, and what a great one he is. He actually complemented me on a couple of points. He was thorough and found every little thing that was incorrect. I took second in pro division and was very pleased as this was a customers mount and only the second boar I ever mounted. Marcus gave me a great critiquing!

Good luck!

I am going to take a boar to rocksboro and inter it this will be my first. I not looking to win or even place but will look to improve my work. Like the others had to say its not to be scared but wanting to learn to be better. That what I think these shows are all about.Buy the way does anyone know why they are not going to have the show in rocksboro NC any more after this year.

Thanks swampdog.
