I mounted my first fox today and its looks ok but the hair started to slip while I was mounting it. it looks like a wet rat right now because I dont want to try and mess with the hair. after it sets for a week or two how can i get the hair to lay the right way? I dont know why it started to slip ether. I taned with lutan f and did what the kit says to do, the only thig I did not do was use a necker knife on the hide I thought it was thin enough and I did not degrease it with anythig, I did not think a fox would need it. would skipping these two steps make it slip?

should have used a necker knife but the sking is already so thin on a fox. it could have slipped for alot of reasons. not properly taken care of. maybe you were working with it to long and the heat from your hands made it slip. them would be my two guesses.

Necker Nonsense

Bob, nonsense. You do not need a Necker Knife on a fox or on anything else for that matter. Necker is just a brand name. It's like saying you should always use a Dakota fleshing machine to flesh deer. When in fact an Eager Beaver or any other type will do.

What the kit was probably trying to say is, flesh the animal well using an industry-accepted knife or method.
I have tanned hundreds of fox and do not own a Necker.

It probably slipped because wild foxes do that. Kudos to you for not touching or pulling on the hair.

Once the mount is bone dry for at least 2 weeks, then go back over it and lather it up with shampoo and water. Rinse well. Then blow dry it and brush the hair "backwards" and that will make it all fluffy and pretty.
