while drying a ruffed grouse for final mounting, i ran across a sponge looking thing about the size of a dime and about as thick as a nickle, i found no live critters but it has been in the freezer since OCT. this sponge was located under wing in the downey area of the wing pocket, removing i lost feathers but will put this side down (flying mount) my question is will these critters come back or should i replace this bird with another?

I had lice once when I was a kid and lice are itty bitty and from what you said thats way to big thewy are about the size of this + sign and its probally not eggs cause eggs are not spongy they are dandriff looking hope that helped..
It would be hard to say for sure. But it sounds like a sarcoid. a fibrous growth on the skin itself. hind of like a benign tumor
Lice are very small, less than a grain of rice although they do prefer the downy feather areas, usually nearer the vent. I am not familiar with sarcoids although they sound goshawful. Any possibility it is a burr or similar sticker wrapped up in the downy feathers? We shoot lots of grouse in cockle burrs and feathery wads are not uncommon...
lice, ticks, or fleas from animals you get? I was thinking you could put the animal in a garbage bag, add some flea powder and shake. Would this work on fur bearer's and other small mammals? Any other ways of getting rid of parasites, because I don't want to get lice or a disease
