I just defrosted an otter that I tanned in in krowtan 2000 when I whent to place him on the form his tail hair slipped realy bad is it beacause I did not flesh the fat all the way of right now I am letting it dry to see if when the skin drys some will the fur stay in better if it does I can cut of the hide that is missing hair but if it does not hen I am probably going to make the full size form into a wall or pedistal mount. If you dont have anny helpfull tips I would still like your opinion on whether a wall or pedistal would be better. how hard is it to get a replacement tail for a otter.

Consider this

If the rest of your otter is fine, Consider mounting the animal where the tail will be hid, sitting on it, under a log, ect. I would also try to get the mount dried out just as fast as you can without cooking it too. It is probable that you either didn't get the fat off the tail enough to let the salt penetrate the skin to set the hair, or just missed salting that part period, I know for me that I have missed salting the edges on several bears over the years and yes the hair always seams to fall out there. Hope this helps.

Krowtan

The directions on krowtan states to clearly flesh and degrease before the tanning process, so yes I would say you should have removed the fat from the tail prior to tanning...that`s pretty much a given with any fur you handle...

I agree with Mike, Put a fan on it and don't pull on the hair until it's dry and if you can mount it in a position that would hide the tail I would go that direction. I know with KrowTann you skip the salting process but did you open the tail up or insert a wick through the tail lengthwise to draw the Krowtann in? If you didn't do either I would say thats the cause of the slipping on the tail.
If the hide is slipping anywhere else I would guess that the cause of the problem was already in effect before the KrowTann.

Fats and grease form a wall.

If the rest of the hide slipped I would say you had a bad hide, but since its only a spot and you already admit to LEAVING FAT ON THE SKIN.

You know where the fault is.

thanks for all the help

once I finished fleshing I saw that there was red raw spots where the hair was slipping I went ahead and did a 1/2 life size mount.
On the leaving the fat on toppic I rought fleshed like the derections say they also say to finish fleshing after the tanning is done but I quess if it is to thik then it does not get through.
I did skin out the tail.
