Sells you a rotten cape. Hmm? Kidding aside, thats cutting between and splitting the two sides of the lip (the inside the mouth part from the outside or hair side. So that they are fillet out flat, not split apart from one another.
Fold your fingers into the palm of your hand. This is a lip. If you slowly open your fingers, that is splitting. Hopefully, you get the idea. That's how it was explained to me. You basically use a scalpel to cut open the lip so that it can be thinned or shaved down. There may be a better explanation behind the orange search button. It's one of those terms that taxidermists use that really confuse beginners. But when you get a little experience under your belt, you realize it explains what the process is perfectly. Okay, look at your own lip. If you bite your lip, you realize that there is alot of meat between the inside lip skin and the outside lip skin. And as you'll find out, meat is a taxidermists enemy. Ya' don't want it! So what you have to do is SPLIT the lip skin on the inside and remove the meat. Even on things small such as squirrels, this has to be done- don't cheat yourself and skip it, it will come back to haunt you when the mount is dry!
