Tanning deer capes the right way

I was trained to tan deer hides the following, flesh, salt, rehydrate, brush on Liquitan, and apply 30 mins later. What is everyones opinion on this meathod? I put alot of time into the final product so I dont want the hide to pull 10 years down the road. If I added pickeling to that process would that produce a sadisfactory result for a mount that will last 50 years? With birds, most people use borax for them. After the boraxing would a quick coat of Liquitan be good to tan it and not keep bugs away? Thanks.

I did that for yes, then after beiing away from the shop of 6 weeks on safari, I cam back. WAWHHHOOOOOO did something smell rotten! I searched and searched then found the problem it was the deer capes on the mounted heads! The mounts were fine otherwise, but had a moldy musty smell. After that I pickle everything! Then get to the tan.

In my opinion

For 32 bucks a person can send capes to the tannery and get a more consistant tan with out the problems from tanning your own! Time is money after all!

Hi Mike. What tannery do you use to get a quality tan for $32 a cape? I'm looking to change tanneries.
Thanks
