I am new to taxidermy and have bought a couple books and videos. I was wondering what is the simplest method of tanning a deer cape. I saw that there is a one step tanning solution in Van Dykes catalog called "KrowTann 2000", would this be the way to go? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I use Krowtan and have had 0 problems...just make sure you follow the directions to a "T". If you have any questions call Ozark Woods, they are very helpful in any problems that you may create. One of my jugs leaked on an elk cape, causing more water to be added. I called and approximated the amount of extra water had leaked and they gave me the exact formula of what to add, cape came out perfect. Also it is cheaper to buy in quantity from Ozark and they ship immediately!
After experimenting around with KrowTann as a tan, I believe KrowTann would be an excellant choise for a beginner.I have not used it on a deer yet, but have had excellant results on small/med. mammals which can easily have hair slippage. It is very simple to use and the beginner should get excellant results. As you get more involved in tanning, you could then learn the other methods of tanning and understand how they work and then also try them to see which one you may like.
