After your pickle, hang the cape for about thirty minutes to drain. After that make a bath of one ounce of baking soda to a gallon of water. Soak the hide in that for about thirty minutes. Take out rinse well, drain and then apply your liqua-tan.
There is no need to check any ph if you follow this. I reuse my pickle so I don't try to bring up my Ph. Instead I make a seperate bath just to neturlize.
