Cleaning Authentic Zebra Rug

I apologize in advance that my question has nothing to do with taxidermy. If anyone can give me an answer, it would be a taxidermist though. Also, this forum is my last resort (I've been searching google for hours to no avail).

How to clean a Zebra skin rug??

I inherited an authentic zebra skin rug that was purchased approximately 25 years ago (for $1000). It has never been cleaned, but is in good condition if you overlook wear and tear, a few heavily worn spots, lots of dirt from foot traffic, and yellowing that I thought was its original color until I inspected it closly and discovered it was originally an off-white. If this matters, the rug has a felt backing to it.

More than anything, the rug has sentimental value, and I can't risk ruining it by cleaning it in an appropriate manner. (I found instructions for cleaning zebra print rugs and didn't realize they pertained to cowhide with the zebra stripes printed on it).

Any advise you can share would be appreciated. Thanks.
