Help! Desperate Housewife made BIG mistake

Submitted by Desperate Housewife on 5/12/05 at 8:32 PM. ( )

Okay Pros....hubby is out of town and I unplugged his personal freezer in his shop(I know-shouldn't have been there). The problem is I forgot to plug it back in and the stuff has thawed out. I plugged it back in because everything was still cold and I was wondering if his stuff is ruined and if he will be able to tell I did this. He has some whole deer heads, an otter, coyote and some fish. I REALLY need someone to tell me how to get out of this mess and if I can salvage his stuff. It's nothing he is doing for anyone's his stuff.

Should BE Fine

if evevry thing was stiil cold, it has happen to me before and every thing was fine. How long was the freezer off?

Pretend you know nothing?

Tell him there was a power outage? Whatever gave you the idea to unplug it in the first place unless it was accidentally. I hope that "still cold" was in fact COLD. If it wasn't, in Korea they have a statement that might apply to you: "Lady, you in DEEP kim chi!" Bet you won't need a repeat of that lesson.

5? days

I'm guessing about last weekend (I'm not sure if it was Sat or Sun)

Like it

George, I think I like your idea. They were cold not COLD. Gotta hate the electric company.......I'm afraid if he finds out he's gonna stuff me in the freezer (just kidding I think).

Move out !

This response submitted by Buckeye on 5/12/05 at 9:06 PM. ( )

He probably won't notice your gone until he finds that his shop has a foul smell and then he will be so mad he won't care. Just kidding, hope everything will be fine. Good Luck!

Happened to me for over a week

I had this happen to my freezer when I went on Vacation I hit the wrong breaker and got back about 8 days later. When I went to hit the breaker for the lights saw this breaker off and wondered why when I put on I heard the freezer kick on. I opened it and the stuff was still cold and I even had ice on the bottom. I didn't lose a thing including the birds on top that were total thawed. It was in March and the out side temp was cold and the freezer was next to a door.

Pack your bags, you can be in Mexico beofre he gets home

This response submitted by Sarah on 5/12/05 at 9:48 PM. ( )

Yea, my Mom did that last year. I could have killed her!

I have to wonder why people think the freezer has to be unplugged for any reason? Even the empty freezer may not chill if its left unplugged all summer.

I really think Mexico would be a good place to go for you. I think it will be hard for you to be found in Mexico City or even Panama.
Best wishes in your new life.

Might want to tell him what happened. Animals might be fine, but he would prob appreciate knowing. Just my opinion :)

Great point, Sarah

This response submitted by George on 5/12/05 at 10:14 PM. ( )

Why DO people do that? The copper lines carrying the refrigerant also insure that the seals are lubricated. When a freezer is cut off "for the summer" the copper sometimes corrodes and turns brittle along with those seals. Then when you turn it on during hunting season, you find that you've burned out your compressor trying to push air through those lines after the refrigerant has all leaked out. Don't unplug the freezers people.

how full was the freezer?

This response submitted by Griz on 5/12/05 at 10:39 PM. ( )

if it was half or more i would say no sweat... if it was less than half i would start sweating a little and if it was nearly empty i would be thinking of something REALLY good to make it up to him!

This response submitted by DOYLE on 5/12/05 at 10:48 PM. ( )

I do refrigeration work and it is best to leave a freezer plugged. There is oil in the compressor and if left unplugged it all drains to the bottom of the compressor. Kinda like starting a dry engine.

oh and my two cents on the lying....

This response submitted by Griz on 5/12/05 at 11:04 PM. ( )

i would confess as soon as possible. Honesty is the best policy, and not just if someone asks you about it. In any situation you should always come clean willingly but in this situation if he knows what happened he would be wise to treat everything with stop-rot as soon as he started to thaw/work on it just to be safe, as an extra precaution.

I hope you didn't marry a jerk and he doesn't hold this against you cause "people are more important than dead animals in a freezer, especially the person you are married to", and only a jerk would freak out on you for an honest mistake.

Candle light dinner, lingerier, the truth followed by a nice bottle of Stop-Rot. Purchase it on-line and have it delivered before he returns home.
