Acid Swell

Submitted by John on 5/17/05 at 9:40 PM. ( ) 138.89.129.194

I just finished a deer head and I had some acid swell, the cape was neutrilized, also while I was putting the cape on the form I noticed some skin was peeling behind the ears.

Question: Will the rest of the hide be ok in the future?

Any advise or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Remedy for acid swell

After my first experience with acid swelling nearly 30 years ago I quickly learned that it can be prevented with just a handful of salt in every rinse and bath, even the neutralizer. If I measured and I don't, I'd say 1/4 cup per 5 gal. of liquid. For me acid swelling is a thing of the past. As for the skin peeling from behind the ears, this has nothing to do with acid swelling and is simply epidermal breakdown from improper handling. The rest of your head will probably dry in good shape and a little creative painting will fix the ears.
