I would like to know if altering the nose on whitetail forms is a common practice. I have mounted about 15 heads and was always able to get a nose measurement close enough to fit and look as it should. Now, I have 2 deer that the noses seem short for there size. One I con understand because it was broken and somewhat deformed. I always get good advice from all of you guys so I thought you could help out again. THANKS!

It is hard to find a perfect nose on most forms. The smile may be crooked, a nostril higher than the other, eye sockets not level with face. The nose may even be crooked. My last mount had a chin and mouth that was crooked. I find that I need to tweak the face on most forms a little bit. But there shouldn't be any reasons not to order a form where you cant get the nose to eye length dead on or very close.
I am goig to have to shorten at least 1 to 1 1/2 inches on these forms. It's my first altering job and I don't want to screw this up.
If its more than a half an inch or so, Id look for a form that fits a little better. Youll have to do a considerable amount of blending if you shorten one an inch and a half.
I have mounted hundreeds of deer and I personaly take only one measuremrnt. The neck, never had a problem.Go back and reajust after mounting and every thing will almost allways draw up to fit.
Just get a form that fits the neck you have, and buy a change out head of a different size.
