Another good place for reference pictures are books. I have purchased 3, one for foxes, one for mountain lions and a super bargain, HUGH book on North American wildlife that I picked up from Barnes and Noble for 15 bucks that had an original price tag of 72 dollars!
Another thing that I do, (that probably looks pretty silly to anyone who walks into my shop) is pretend that I'm the animal..in other words, If I'm going for an aggressive look then I will make the same look on my face and from that I can tell which muscles change around the eyes, how the eyelids will look etc. Probably sounds pretty silly, but I just try to know what look I'm going for, stand in front of the mount and see if it seems like it looking at or focused on something thats half the battle. Also blow the animals dry while they are still wet, in other words don't try to let the animal dry then hope to fluff the fur up later. Just some tips that work for me !
