I am goung to mount my first squirrel ( it is a grey) and I often trap live fox squirrels...my question is could I use a live fox squirrel for reference? Kayla

that would add alot of stress to an already stressed animal, possibly causing it to die. There are some differences between the two species. The best bet is when you are ordering your form, and such, just spend a few extra and get a reference set. I've seen them for as little as $10. If you are serious about taxidermy, go ahead and spend the money and you won't have to trap squirrels to mount one and they are yours for life. Just my 2 cents
but I have kept a live squirrel for a day in captivity and he did just fine when I released him the next day? what are the differences? other than the color I dont see much difference
I just did my first tree critter and it went great but i used instant cure because it came in the kit and it does what it says instantly if ya know what I mean.but it went good and is going to turn out great for my first.the next is always better.
There is not much difference between a grey and a fox other than size and color. The faces on a fox squirrel might be slightly longer. Although I've shot some grey squirrels that had dark brown bellies and black faces. You could also use a red squirrel as reference.
