Ive see a local taxidermist use a tumbling drum to put his tanned bears in (he does his own tanning), just wondering what a drum does to the bear hide?

Sawdust drums dry the fur, break the hide, and can be used to clean the fur. Joe

It all depends on the size of the drum. If it is a 50 gal drum it is strictly used for cleaning purposes. A large sawdust tumbler is used for breaking and cleaning of the hides. A 50 gal will not allow breaking (softening) of hides.
