Faking a wolf

Submitted by Lee D. on 6/8/05 at 11:32 PM. ( Blackmageshadow@hotmail.com ) 209.86.76.68

How would I go about faking a coyote for a wolf? One of my friend's birthdays is approaching and he LOVES wolves (major wolf nerd), but is really against killing them. Therefore, I cannot buy a wolf skin (because of him and.... The cost would hurt my pocket.) But I do have this really stretched out coyote cape. I was wondering if I were to dye the coyote to a believable natural black colour, and put it onto a wolf form, would it be believable?
Has anyone ever tried this?
Is there a professional fur dyer that could colour the coyote skin correctly?
I'm thinking the muzzle wouldn't be broad enough...

...you send him this in a framed print?

Email me at the address above if you're interested. The poem comes printed on the background of wolf eyes.

That's a stretch!

If you can get a coyote skin of any kind on a wolf mannikin I'd like to see the pictures when you're done! Perhaps you could use a coyote to put on a wolf puppy form. That way it would have the wolf face?

dying fur

it is very easy to color a coyote black - just get some black hair color at wal mart (cheapest or most expensive) - use it just like you were coloring your own hair - leave on 22 minutes and rinse out - voila - if you get a very large coyote (4 1/2 n to e) it will pass off as a small wolf

It's not that easy, mature wolves have an eye to nose bigger then a coyote in both dimensions at all times. (longer, thicker)

There are exceptions but they are no less costly then a genuine wolf.

If this is not for lifesize, a genuine wolf cape is better then a faked up coyote. Wolf capes are not expensive.

A wolf nerd may see this as a slam against the wolf, and find the gesture "fake", rather then a cost-savings business move. Remember the people who are avid fans of anything will have elitism, preferences, and will be picky and demand only 'the real deal' or the best.

A dyed black pelt always looks like a dyed black pelt. You can tell a dyed from a natural any day. Plus, you need to get the banding per hair, the "tipping", correct for any degree of realism. This can only be done "professionally" - it involves bleaching and re-coloring. Cheapest quote I have is $70 for the dye job.

Having dyed a mink with hair dye from Wal-Mart a few years ago, I wouldn't recomend it to an enemy, let alone a friend. That is 100% trouble.

No way Terry! Sorry but I disagree

A coyote can NOT be used as a wolf unless the person has no idea about the distinct differences between the two! I think anyone that would even suggest or tryy to do something like that needs to study up on reference material! Size being a major factor! BOY oh BOY! I don't even know where to start so I'll just simply tell you that the no name guy and Hogger have it right! I hope you take this advise and not Terry's. Sorry Terry but there are some things you just can't do and still keep the realism.

Brush wolf

The coyote is also called a brush wolf in the midwest. Try that. Other wise you can't make something it's not.

Thanks guys

Yeah, I figured that this may be a bit difficult. So I'll just mount a (natural) black-ish yote and pass it off for a lupus (and still call it a Brush Wolf)
Sounds like a good enough idea

Why

would it need to be black? Of all the wolves I've seen, only 1 was black. The one I have mounted in my living room is colored real similiar to the coyote hide hanging on my wall.....

Have you seen terryr's mounts on Ebay?

That explains a lot.

Black wolves just seem more mystical

I'd like to make it sorta black because it is hard to replicate the natural grey , white, or reddish fur of a wolf out of a coyote. Plus, black wolves just seem more striking to the eye.
