Just starting out and havent done a mammal yet. I am gonna send it out to get tanned and have never done it before. What do i do? i flesh with a necker knife, turn eyes ears lips turn ears and then salt right. DO i have to send it right away after i salt it or can i do it after a couple of weeks. How do i box it? i know they sound like dumb questions but i have no idea i have only done fish. Thanks for all your help

just do as you stated, but, dont send off right after salting. Salt it another time and wait for it to dry to almost hard, but so that its pliable enough to fold and put into a box. i use balled up news paper for the padding. i would also punch an i.d # or whatever you wish with an awl in the hide, just so you can i.d it when you get it back. drop a paper or biz card in the box so they know all your info. label the box and off you go.

call the tanner

Ask them what they prefer. Most want a deposit and some kind of a packing slip with your name, address etc.,and a punch code#.Tanners charge for any prep work you may have missed. Again ask them what they want. I would recommend you scrape the hide clean after your first salting (while it is still pliable). Salt again.Wait 24 hours, ( or sooner depending on how fast it's drying)and scrape some more. Let it air dry a little. Fold hair-side in before it gets too hard. You don't want to crack the hide.Ship it off like Norm said. The tanner should give you some type of confirmation that it was received.

Good Luck!

Dan
