When cleaning skulls for a european mount, is it customary to buff out the stains and crud built up over the teeth before applying the whitening agent? Thanks. Chuck

if anyone else does, but I do because it looks much better.
Just a preference I suppose but you're going to find out that "whitening" the teeth is not going to be easy. Those teeth are enamel and the stains are imbedded deeply. Soaking them in the denture tablets may work to some degree, but I'd bet that even after you treat them, they're still going to show some stains.
I think the teeth look better if they're left natural color. I do this with all my skulls even the small ones and have had good remarks on it. Small skulls such as wolves, bears, wolverines, coyotes and such the teeth whiten quite nicely in peroxide, but as far as moose, buffalo and deer, the stains pretty much remain. I will pick out the grass and things from the inside of the teeth, but that's about it.
