I am looking to start taxidermy soon and I have a ton of questions. I am a full-time teacher in Richmond, Virginia; so I have quite a bit of extra time to do this..Hopefully, if things take off, I can do this full time. This is something that I have always had a desire to do, but for one reason or another could never get going. I have two youngens and a somewhat limited income, so out-of-town training is not an option. I have read several books and watched several videos...but I feel like I need some hands-on training before starting a business.
How much money should I invest to get started? (I projected between $8000-$10,000)
Does anyone know of training sites in Virginia?
What permits are required (state and federal)?
What certifications are required or recommended?
I have more questions...but I'll ask those later.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Tommy

Before sinking 8-10K in to something... TRY IT first.
Have you yet mounted a domestic or "practice" animal?
If you have, may we see it for critique?
Make sure it's within your scope and ability before you jump in with the cash.
Otherwise, there are other animal-product related businesses that you could recoup your money on, a LOT faster.
Many here say that it's difficult if not impossible to make a living from taxidermy. One reknowned taxidermist on here complained her business was not thriving, she could not even pull in $20K a year, and she's a good person.
Have TWO million dollars in the bank and go full time taxidermy. Within a few years, you'll be down to your goal.
That's not my words. Some anonymous person wrote that a few years back, and there's a lot of wisdom in the words.
Try this, first. Start with what You have available during hunting and fishing seasons in your area. Then see what KITS are available from the supplier that you recieved catalogs from. ( Mckinzie and Rhineharts) These kits will have most if not all the items you need to get started. You may need a few others, but , you should have these around the house. Also when you have questions about any thing, use the orange button to the left, it is full of all kinds of answeres. And if all else fails, ask on here and some one will help you out. Bob

I tire of hearing how hard it is to get started. I want to help.
We are in desprate need of new taxidermists. You dont need the $8,000.00 investemt. Only knife needle and thread. One more thing, the best I have ever found: The book titled TAXIDERMY. By Leon Pray Macmillian publishing co. thirtienth printing 1978.
That is all you need to start working 16 hours a day at a job you love.

Ask a Taxidermist if they need any help.I did and offered to work for free to get my foot in the door. Now I work for them full time and I also have my own business to.
Good Luck.
