Just wondering how a hand held sewing machine would work for sewing trim for bear ect..rugs.
Is there any model type that is for taxidermy,
Thanks for info.

I don't think a little handheld, like the portable ones that are used to re-attach buttons etc. will work. They are way too weak to penetrate the leather plus 3-4 layers of fabric (2 of trim, 1 underpadding, you get the point).
If cost is a serious problem, send it out to a wholesale rugger.
If you want to DIY:
You may want to look in to trying out an industrial machine. Some of the lower end industrial machines are similar priced to good home sewing machines.
Some home sewing machines have no problems doing "bear rug" type work, I know this for a fact as I just produced a fur rug on my home machine. It wasn't bear, but it was 2 layers of heavy fabric and a layer of furry leather.
I was not using a fancy "walking foot" or anything, but many home machines now come with an optional walking foot for doing heavier stuff like "Sunbrella", and leather.
Someone suggested going to a shoe repair shop and asking what type machines they use. This is also a good tip.
